To provide another channel of communications and to allow better collaboration during WebShop 2007, we will offer Instant Messager (IM) and Chat services using Jabber technology.
Jabber is best known as "the Linux of instant messaging" -- an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo. Under the hood, Jabber is a set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages, presence, and other structured information in close to real time.
You will need to download and install an IM client that supports the Jabber/XMPP protocols (if you do not have admin rights, you will need to have the softwared downloaded and installed for you). While there are literally hundreds of Jabber clients, we recommend using one of the following clients:
| Platform | Suggested Client(s) | Download Site | Set Up information |
| Windows | Pidgin | http://www.pidgin.im/ | Pidgin |
| Psi | http://psi-im.org/ | Psi | |
| Linux/Unix | Pidgin | http://www.pidgin.im/ | Pidgin |
| Psi | http://psi-im.org/ | Psi | |
| Macintosh OS X | Adium X | http://www.adiumx.com/ | |
| Psi | http://psi-im.org/ | Psi |
Once the Jabber client has been downloaded and installed, you will need to configure the client to connect to the Jabber server we will be using.
Webshop 2007 will be making use of the Jabber service operated by OAR's Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL).
